Preparation For Mastering

Preparation for mastering is simpler than some people might have you believe. As long as your song/track is not clipping ie. distorting it can be sent as is. Of course, it's an excellent idea to develop gain staging habits that will result in the ideal scenario of 4 to 6 dB of headroom, but, this isn't actually a necessary requirement. The gain can simply be pulled down at this end to create the headroom needed. Please render it out of your software in the same format it was recorded/mixed/composed in.

Try to leave a second or two of silence at the beginning of your track (and at the end!). You may be surprised by the amount of software that will cut off the first few samples of a track upon rendering which could result in, for instance, a kick drum losing the start of it's attack.
